She wanted more and worked towards her dreams and earned her break-out role in “The Underground Railroad,” and now Thuso is gradually making her mark in America as well, with a lead role in “The Woman King,” as Nawi. Things were not easy; Thuso has seen her fair share of struggles and still managed to overcome all odds to be where she is today.

Who are Thuso Mbedu’s Parents?

On 8 July 1991, born Actress Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu, aka Thuso Mbedu,  hails from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Nata, South Africa; she came to this world to a Zulu mother and a Xhosa and Sotho father; these characteristics reflect in her multicultural name.

However, she never met her father because he passed away when she was at an early age, and unfortunately, she lost her mother at the age of 4 too due to a brain tumor; it was her Zulu grandmother that raised her and her sister, Masentle Nomalungelo Mbedu, aka Noma Mbedu in the Pelham area.

Thuso attended Pelham Primary School and then went to Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School. Her go-to aim was to have a career in the medical field; her grandmother was quite supportive of it as well, as she would be the first in their family to be in that field; growing up, this young star was affected by seasonal allergies that caused her swelling and other skin issues, and she was determined to become a dermatologist.

Things began to change when she attended drama school during her high school days and realized that art could change people’s lives, too; coming from a small place, working in Hollywood was a nice dream, but it was seldom attainable.

But she knew acting was her purpose, and she wanted to do something she loved; breaking the news to her grandmother was hard; she was not impressed and did not speak to Mbedu for a whole month. Thuso went on to study dramatic arts at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, which also offered a five-week summer acting exchange program at New York’s Stella Adler Studio of Acting.

She graduated in 2013, and the journey after that was not easy as she left home with no financial backing and no place to stay and was forced to ask for help from one friend.

How did Thuso Mbedu’s acting journey start?

Thuso Mbedu did a course in modeling before she had to quit to complete her studies; she was also a ramp model for a while; by 2014, she had started her stage career by taking part in college productions like “-The Crooks Eye,” “The Suit Role: Matilda,” she had the lead in both of these plays and a supporting role in “Indawo: Space Lab.”

Mbedu worked in famous commercials like Nivea, Dettol, even tone, Nando’s, and Steers for a few years. Mbedu later began scoring supporting roles in South African soaps and series, like “Isibaya.” Still, she never really got the chance to celebrate, as 3 days before her TV debut, she lost her grandmother.

The timing was terrible as she had to use the little money she saved from her paycheck to relocate her sister and her daughter to Johannesburg so they could all live together. She did get a few good roles in “Scandal!” and “Lokoza,” but the pay was very little, and she was running out of savings as she had not worked in 6 months; they had to borrow money from the bank, and it was all a dark and unpleasant time.

To keep herself engaged, Thuso began writing scripts for movies that she felt people needed to see and wanted a proper representation of all her cultures. Her determination finally paid off when she got a leading role in “Is’Thunzi,” her character Winnie was loved and appreciated so much that she received two International Emmy nominations and was already a star back at home.

Her performance earned her three awards, one of which was for best female performance in a New Scripted Series.

All the fame and success established her as a stunning actress and even featured her on several magazine covers, one of them being Forbes. Although her career has just begun, her most significant achievement is landing a lead in “The Woman King,” alongside Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, and Sheila Atim.
