What happened to Mahsa Amini?
Mahsa Amini (July 22, 2000- September 16, 2022) was faced with police brutality as soon as she entered the capital of Iran, Tehran, with her family; she was arrested on September 13, 2022, by the regime’s so-called “Guidance Patrol” and was accused of violating the law that required women to cover their hair with a hijab or a headscarf in when in public and their arms and legs with loose clothing, she was taken into custody by the police due to a fault in how Amini wore the hijab.
Amini was then transferred to the “Moral Security” agency to be educated on the rules and regulations in Iran; reports state that she collapsed on the way to the detention center; she was released in an hour and rushed to Kasra Hospital by ambulance.
Mahsa was in a coma for 2 whole days, and on 16 September, she passed away in the intensive care unit; her family members, state media, and the Iranian activists wanted justice for Amini’s suspicious death, but the hospital that treated her released a report on Instagram stating that she was brain dead when admitted, authorities later took the post down, there were bruises on her head and legs, the other others who were also detained with Amini said that the officers had severely beaten her for resisting the insults and curses, a couple of doctors too mentioned that she suffered a brain injury, due to the visible symptoms, bleeding from the ears and bruises under the eyes, medical scans of her skull, confirmed the bone fracture, hemorrhage, and brain edema.
The police, however, denied all of it; they simply said that she went into heart failure at a station, fell on the floor, and died after two days in a coma; eyewitnesses had a different story, they had seen her get beaten, and her head hit the side of a police car, her parents too mentioned that their daughter was fit and was in perfect health before taken to the center.
After her death, Iran shot up with protests, and people from all over expressed their rage on social media; thousands of women took part in the protests in the capital, they were seen cutting their hair and burning hijabs, chanting “No to the headscarf, no to the turban, yes to freedom and equality!” they together raised their voice against the violence Mahsa Amini faced.
Things got even more ugly when the government began to retaliate; 9 people were reported dead, all killed in the protest; among these, a 16-year-old boy also lost his life when security forces opened fire on protesters, and the unrest has now spread to 20 major cities, including Tehran.
