Based on reports, the incident unfolded when deputies responded to an emergency call at the “Mag Pi” store in the 28000 block of Hook Creek Road around 5 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they discovered the store’s owner, Laura Carleton, aged 66, with a gunshot wound. Paramedics, unfortunately, pronounced her deceased on-site.

The assailant, armed with a handgun, fled on foot, according to sheriff’s officials. A brief time later, deputies encountered the suspected gunman near Rouse Ranch Road and Torrey Road intersection, ultimately resulting in the suspect’s fatal shooting. The identity of the perpetrator remains undisclosed.

Fortunately, deputies involved in the encounter were unharmed. Sheriff’s officials did not disclose whether a firearm was recovered at the scene or if Carleton’s shooting would be probed as a potential hate crime.
