Wes Phillips’ Career

In 2002 and 2003, Wes Phillips showcased his quarterback skills with the San Diego Riptide in the AF2 Arena football league. He then returned to UTEP as a student assistant before becoming the quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M University in 2004. His coaching helped the team secure an impressive 10-2 record and a victory in the Lone Star Conference in 2005.

At West Texas A&M, Phillips played a pivotal role in developing quarterback Dalton Bell, leading the team to boast the top-ranked passing offense in NCAA Division II. In 2006, he moved to Baylor for a similar coaching role.

Success followed as he joined his father, Wade Phillips, with the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff in 2007. Together, they celebrated NFC East titles in 2007 and 2009, but faced challenges in the 2010 season leading to Wade’s departure. Wes persisted and climbed the ranks in Dallas under Jason Garrett, eventually becoming the tight ends coach in 2013.

In 2014, Phillips embarked on a new journey with the Washington Redskins (now known as the Commanders), coaching tight ends under head coach Jay Gruden. His work with players like Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed saw Reed earn a Pro Bowl nod after the 2016 season.

Reuniting with head coach Sean McVay in 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams, Phillips continued to contribute significantly. By 2021, he took on an additional role as the pass game coordinator alongside his tight ends coaching duties.

Phillips reached the pinnacle of coaching dedication when the Los Angeles Rams secured victory in Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals, earning him his first Super Bowl ring.

On February 20, 2022, the Minnesota Vikings welcomed Phillips as their offensive coordinator for the 2022 season, marking another major milestone in his coaching journey.
