Hydeia Broadbent (June 14, 1984 – February 20, 2024) was a notable activist recognized for her efforts in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS. She was part of the first generation of children born HIV positive.

Hydeia passed away on February 20, 2024, after living with AIDS since birth. Her father, Loren Broadbent, announced her passing on Facebook, describing her as a beloved friend, mentor, and daughter.

Diagnosed with HIV at the age of 3, She faced numerous challenges throughout her life. Despite facing challenges throughout her life, she remained dedicated to spreading hope and educating others about HIV/AIDS.

Born on June 14, 1984, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Hydeia Broadbent faced adversity from the start, being born with HIV. Initially placed in foster care, she found a permanent home when Loren and Patricia Broadbent adopted her, providing her with love and stability. It wasn’t until 1987 that the Broadbents discovered Hydeia’s HIV-positive status.

Little is known about Hydeia’s birth mother, who left her at a Las Vegas hospital. However, a surprising turn of events unfolded three years later when Hydeia’s birth mother abandoned another child at the same hospital, also testing positive for HIV.

Upon learning this, the hospital informed the Broadbents, prompting Hydeia’s own HIV testing, which confirmed her positive status.

Despite facing numerous health issues, including blood infections, pneumonia, and brain fungal infections, Hydeia defied early expectations that she wouldn’t survive childhood.

Not only did she survive, but she also battled against AIDS when it developed at the age of five. Hydeia began her formal education in seventh grade and continued her studies at Odyssey High School in Las Vegas, where she engaged in remote learning with the assistance of a computer.

Hydeia Broadbent’s Activism

From the tender age of 6, Hydeia Broadbent fearlessly embarked on her journey as an advocate, bravely sharing her experiences living with HIV/AIDS. Her activism began when she met Elizabeth Glaser, the late founder of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, during her treatment at the National Institutes of Health.

Recognizing Hydeia’s powerful voice, Glaser sought permission from Hydeia’s mother to allow her to speak publicly about her journey with HIV/AIDS. With her mother’s support, Hydeia’s impactful advocacy journey began. She became a familiar face at numerous events, including AIDS benefit concerts, documentaries, college campus education events, and talk shows.

Hydeia’s appearances on shows like the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 and Oprah’s Where Are They Now left a lasting impression, making her one of the most-requested guests. She also featured in a Nickelodeon special alongside Magic Johnson. Following this special, Hydeia established the Hydeia L. Broadbent Foundation and received a Black Achievement Award from Jet magazine.

Her presence extended to Essence, The Maury Povich Show, Good Morning America, and even the 1996 Republican National Convention, where she boldly declared, “I am the future, and I have AIDS.” In 2002, her family published a book titled “You Get Past The Tears,” and they were featured on Extreme Home Makeover in 2004.

In 2014, Hydeia continued her advocacy work as a spokesperson for the Magic Johnson Foundation and other AIDS activist organizations. She actively participated in screening drives alongside actress Jurnee Smollett, traveling nationally and internationally to educate and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and combat discrimination against those living with the condition.

Hydeia’s daily routine included taking three antiretroviral pills, with most of her medical expenses covered by herself. She emphasized that HIV is not a death sentence but a life sentence, requiring a lifelong commitment to medication, doctor visits, and navigating insurance challenges.

Through sharing her story, Hydeia aimed to inspire change, highlighting that living with HIV is a journey, not a predetermined fate. In recognition of her impactful contributions, she became an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.
