All About Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez

Daniel Rodriguez (age 49, born on August 25, 1974) is the former Uvalde police chief. Rodriguez resigned shortly after an independent investigation, led by Jesse Prado and commissioned by the city, concluded that all officers from the Uvalde Police Department acted in good faith during their response to the Uvalde High School tragedy.

Prado’s findings have sparked public outrage, with many frustrated by what they see as a failure in law enforcement’s duty. They believe that if the officers had been more cautious on the day of the massacre, many lives could have been saved.

It’s important to note that Rodriguez was on vacation during the incident, with Lieutenant Mariano Pargas serving as acting chief that day. Pargas himself resigned from the Uvalde Police Department in November 2022. Rodriguez has stated that he decided to step down because it is the best move for his family.

Uvalde School Massacre

The Uvalde school shooting took place on May 24, 2022, in Uvalde, Texas, USA, when a teenager named Salvador Ramos attacked Robb Elementary School. Ramos tragically killed 19 students and two teachers during the terrible event. Before the shooting, Ramos argued with his grandmother about not finishing high school.

He then shot her before driving his truck to the school and crashing it into a barrier around 11:30 AM. Ramos went into the school wearing a special vest and carrying a lot of bullets. Police got many calls about the crash near the school. He tried to get into the school through a door, but a teacher had closed it.

The door was supposed to lock, but it didn’t. When police arrived, Ramos shot at them, hurting two officers. Police couldn’t talk to Ramos, so they blocked off the school. Parents begged them to go inside, but officers were scared. They even threatened to use Tasers on parents trying to go in. More officers came, but they didn’t have the right tools to get in.

Finally, a U.S. Marshal gave them a shield to break in. Ramos hid behind a door in a classroom for about an hour, but the door wasn’t locked. Even though officers got in late, they stopped Ramos. Sadly, 22 people, including Ramos, died. People criticized the police for not following the right rules and not putting kids’ safety first.

Daniel Rodriguez’s Resignation

Chief Rodriguez wasn’t in Uvalde on May 24, 2022, when the school shooting happened. He had put Lt. Mariano Pargas in charge that day. Unfortunately, despite Lt. Pargas being there quickly, nineteen kids and two teachers died. Even after being told that students needed help, Lt. Pargas didn’t take charge or rescue them.

Later, in November 2022, Lt. Pargas resigned, but Chief Rodriguez stayed on as the head of the police force. Despite families asking for punishment for officers who didn’t act during the tragedy, Chief Rodriguez has stood by his team and hasn’t taken any disciplinary action.

Investigation began but the private investigator hired by the city mentioned in his report that officers acted in good faith. Shortly after the Uvalde City Council received the report clearing local police officers in the 2022 Robb Elementary School tragedy, Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez resigned. This happened just before the council’s meeting where they decided not to discuss the report yet.
