All About Missing Hiker Lifei Huang

Lifei Huang (2001 – February 4, 2024) was a 22-year-old individual who met a tragic end during a solo trekking expedition. Huang went missing on February 4, 2024, during a solo trekking.

Despite efforts to find her, including searches hindered by heavy snow and avalanche risks, Huang remained missing for almost a week. A tip eventually led authorities to a potential sighting of her body near San Antonio Creek Falls, spotted by someone using a drone. However, bad weather delayed rescue efforts until Sunday.

Huang, described as an inexperienced hiker who had taken risky hikes before, sadly didn’t survive the challenges of Mt. Baldy. Her death adds to the unfortunate number of fatalities on the mountain, which has gained notoriety as a dangerous hiking spot.

In response to several incidents, including numerous rescues and nearly a dozen fatalities in recent years, the Sheriff’s Department has called for limited access to Mt. Baldy, emphasizing the need for caution when hiking there.

When did Lifei Huang Go Missing?

On February 4, 2024, Lifei Huang set off on an exciting adventure to Mt. Baldy. She made sure to inform her friends of her plans, even sharing a video with her boyfriend as she arrived at the trail parking lot around 1:59 pm.

Posting videos on social media, Lifei captured the beauty of the snow-covered landscapes and the dramatic descent into the valley amid relentless rain.

However, the excitement turned to concern when all communication abruptly stopped roughly two hours later, leaving her whereabouts unknown. Responding quickly, San Bernardino County search and rescue teams launched an intensive effort to find the missing student.

Wearing a distinctive yellow jacket, black goggles, and black shoes, Lifei became the focus of an extensive search, with volunteers also joining the mission to find her.

The challenging conditions on Mt. Baldy, with rapidly changing weather and the potential for visibility loss within minutes, made the search more difficult. Even experienced hikers found the unpredictable elements daunting.

As search and rescue teams and committed volunteers faced the mountain’s challenges, the urgency increased in their race against time to uncover Lifei Huang’s fate.

Discovery of Lifei Huang’s Body by Civilian Drone

On February 10, 2024, at approximately 3:25 p.m., the U.S. Forestry Department notified the Sheriff’s Dispatch about a possible breakthrough in the search for missing hiker Lifei Huang. A civilian operating a drone reported a sighting.

Deputies and search and rescue teams quickly responded to the upper San Antonio Creek Falls area, but tough mountain conditions made it hard to reach Ms. Huang’s presumed location. Sheriff’s aviation crews couldn’t search from the air due to strong winds.

To protect the area, search and rescue team members stayed near the site overnight. Sadly, on February 11, 2024, around 7:45 a.m., Sheriff’s Air Rescue 306 sent medics to the location, where they found Ms. Huang deceased.

Ms. Huang and the medics were airlifted off the mountain. Because of dangerous weather conditions, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department strongly advised against mountain activities. The mountain is snowy, and the risk for hikers is very high.
