Peta Murphy Career

Before stepping into politics, Peta Murphy wore many hats, working as a solicitor, barrister, Senior Public Defender at Victoria Legal Aid, Team Leader at the Victorian Law Reform Commission, and Chief of Staff to Labor Shadow Minister Brendan O’Connor MP. Her political journey began in 2016 when she contested Dunkley after Bruce Billson retired.

Despite a 4.1% swing in her favor, victory slipped away, and Chris Crewther from the Liberal Party won. Undeterred, Murphy returned to the political scene in the 2019 election. A fortunate change in electoral boundaries turned Dunkley from a likely Liberal seat to a potentially Labor one.

Seizing this opportunity and securing a 1.7% swing, Murphy created history as Dunkley’s first ALP representative since 1996 and its first female leader. Active in pivotal parliamentary committees, she contributed to the House of Representatives Social and Legal Affairs Committee, Economics Committee, and the Select Selection Committee.

Passionately advocating for early cancer diagnosis and breast screening, Murphy spotlighted healthcare and job creation in Melbourne’s outer suburbs during her debut speech. Her collaboration with the Breast Cancer Network Australia significantly pushed forward cancer treatment and awareness.

In a bipartisan effort alongside Lucy Wicks, former Liberal Member for Robertson, Murphy founded the Parliamentary Friends of Women’s Health in 2021. This platform fostered discussions across party lines on women’s health issues
